Caregiver's Role:
Caregivers must stay alert to changes in client behavior, report concerns promptly to supervisors, and always respond with kindness and attention to safety. Being proactive helps prevent harm and ensures each client’s needs are met with dignity.

A gentle voice and eye contact help reassure the client.
Give the person time to process and respond. Rushing may cause confusion.
Pay attention to the client’s gestures, expressions, and posture to understand how they feel.

Dementia is just a normal part of aging.
Dementia is caused by disease and is not a normal aging process.
People with dementia are always aggressive.
Behavior varies and often reflects fear, pain, or confusion—not intent.
There is nothing caregivers can do to help.
Proper support and routines improve quality of life.
Memory loss is the only symptom of dementia.
Dementia affects thinking, judgment, language, and behavior, not just memory.

Reporting and Supporting Evolving Care Needs
Caregivers play a critical role in identifying and reporting changes in a client’s condition. Subtle shifts—such as changes in eating or toileting habits, mood and behavior, level of participation in activities, or memory and physical abilities—can indicate a decline in health or the need for updated care strategies.
By consistently observing and documenting these changes, caregivers provide vital information that supports supervisors, nurses, and the wider healthcare team in making timely updates to care plans. This ensures safer, more personalized care that adapts to the client’s evolving needs.
